The Platinum Advantage! Platinum VS White Gold

Platinum vs white gold. The advantage platinum mountings have over white gold mountings; strength, stature and rarity.

The question of what the advantages of a platinum mounting are in comparison to a white gold mounting often arises from retail jewelers and consumers alike; both metals make for beautiful jewelry and, from a distance and in the eyes of a novice, look very similar. Then there is the question of why does platinum cost more than gold.Let’s address the latter question first. Platinum is a much rarer metal than gold, by approximately 35%; it has been reported that ten tons of ore must be mined to realize one ounce of pure platinum. Platinum is, also, a heavier and denser metal than gold. This translates into an ounce of platinum being smaller in dimensions than an ounce of gold, so more metal is necessary to produce a piece in platinum than it does in gold. Due, in part, to its’ high melting point and the need to avoid contamination from foreign particles platinum is more costly to work with; but it’s well worth it.Let’s, now, address the initial question, “What are the advantages”?

  • Platinum jewelry is usually 90 to 95% pure and alloyed with either 10% iridium or 5% ruthenium. 18K white gold contains 75% pure gold and 25% alloys which may include a minute amount of nickel; an allergen to some.
  • Platinum, being stronger than gold, allows for more secure setting plus it lacks the “spring back” that may occur when setting in 18W.
  • Some of the best advantages of platinum are that it doesn’t erode nearly as quickly as gold, when scratches occur in platinum the metal is displaced or furrows rather than removed as it is with gold
  • It does not tarnish or oxidize and is, therefore, relatively low maintenance; periodic steam cleaning is recommended.
  • Platinum, being a naturally white metal, retains its’ color with normal wear unlike white gold, which will display a yellowish tint with regular wear.

Regardless of whether you choose white gold or platinum it is important to look for quality of materials as well as workmanship when purchasing fine jewelry; and those are only two of the goals we at Jabel strive to achieve.
